Just like my original washtub evaporator, I’ve kept that garbage can as a constant reminder of another practice not to employ.

THE PITFALLS OF STORING SAP IN A 35-GALLON GARBAGE CAN:

Completely filled, the unit will weigh nearly 325 pounds making it difficult if not impossible to move. Worse yet, the weight limit on our garbage can was 200 pounds. Had we even tried to lift it, we’d have likely torn the handles off, dropped the garbage can, and lost most of our concentrated sap.

If the garbage can is filled to capacity, the expanding sap on a bitter cold night may destroy the cover or worse yet cause the garbage can itself to rupture.

Melting out as much as 90 pounds of ice will wreak havoc with your utility bill adding additional expense to your sugaring efforts.

Counting the cost of the garbage can and hose bib rig, you’ll be investing an additional $30 to store your sap.
